William Jurian Kaula diary
10 MAY 1898
Nothing but rumors afloat about what is going on. The Manilla [sic] victory is being described over and over again since the dispatches have been received from Dewey. It is thrilling and wonderful. It is generally conceded that the Cape Verde fleet would suffer a like annihilation if it comes across the Atlantic. They are better ships and more likely to be a source of much trouble before this is accomplished. Dewey needs reinforcements and supplies in the Phillipeans [sic] and should be prompt in sending them. He cannot hold Manilla [sic] at his mercy for a long time without them..... The Insurgent forces in Cuba do not appear to be what was generally circulated about them in their strength or their numbers. How they ever carry on the warfare is hard to understand when there are so few.
