William Jurian Kaula diary
10 FEB 1898
I saw Martinez's picture for the Salon. It is a brown study. The Aztec goddess of flowers is purched [sic] up on the left and in the middle of the canvas is a small figure of a girl going forward with flowers in her arms. Everything is painted in brown, floor, idol, walls, and the huge hole of a door in the middle, only the light on the figure has any positive color. Martinez has ideas for subjects which are new to us - the materials are, I mean not his ideas of painting them.
I walked down the Boul Mich toward th Palais de Justice with Cartwright and Glover. We were curious to see the crowds that hovered around the buildings while Zola's trial was in progress. Zola's trial may be said to have begun and ended on Monday. As it was generally expected, the court has ruled out any attempt of inference that Dreyfus was unjustly condemned. The crowd was thick along the river and in front of the Palais the whole length of the street on the island. Policemen were out in thousands and everybody was kept moving. Some of the side streets were completely blocked by the police so as to protect Zola and others when they came out. Though there are a number of arrests daily of the few who try to make a demonstration, the city is quiet as a whole and it is not probable that there will be an outbreak of sentiment as long as Zola fails to prove his convictions. The burden of the proof is thrown upon his shoulders. It is a gallant fight for one man to attempt to down the government.
