LESTER E. SMITH.
New Headmaster of Appleton academy at New Ipswich comes from Rochester.
NEW IPSWICH July 25-Plans for the reorganization of New Ipswich Appleton Academy have been announced by the trustees. A new corps of teachers has been engaged, including a new headmaster and it is planned to resume the course in mathematics, which was dropped a hat few years ago. It is expected that there will be about 40 pupils in the academy next year and about 35 in the junior high.
Vernon S. Ames of Wilton, super- intendent of the school district which includes New Ipswich, has recently been elected to the board of trustees and will be active in the management of the school.
The new headmaster is Lester E. Smith of Rochester. He was graduated from Bates, class of 1924. After leaving college he taught history and economics for three years in Rochester High school. He then taught for a year in New Britain, Conn., and for the last year he has been taking graduate work at the University of New Hampshire, where he received his M. A. in June. He will teach English history and economics.
Miss Rosalie D. Mosher, who will teach mathematics and science, was graduated from Colby, where she stood exceptionally high in scholarship. Miss Mildred Bontelle of Milford, was graduated last June from the three year course at Keene Normal school, will teach Latin history and science. Miss Constance Rand of Portsmouth, also a recent graduate of Keene Normal school, will teach French, English and mathematics.
The new teachers are considered to have excellent qualifications for the work and it is believed that, un- der their direction, the academy will give a high grade of instruction to its pupils.
Mr. Smith is soon to move his family here and will occupy the house where the former headmaster, Herschel Lewis, lived.
James Roger diary entries
5th August 1912
Fair, cool morning, growing warmer; wind west to N.W. David painting at Mr. Knight’s all day. I went with Mary and Johnnie to Mr. Walker’s for a load of wood. Picked 2 fowls and cut some lots. This is Mother’s birthday (70 years old). Got letter from May, but none from Hamish.
If I had to pick a house in New Ipswich to live in this, would be it. Lester Smith was headmaster at Appleton from 1946-1950.
That's our house. The chimney was taken down before we bought it. Porch was added later. I like the sassy poses of the people in the picture. Any idea who they are?
