Indian Summer - Poem by L.A. Obear
A hazy mist hangs o'er the hills, Soft'ning the sun's fierce brightness; The floating clouds mock angel robes, So dazzling is their whiteness. The aftermath of clover-fields A dark green ground is lending To show the color of rich fruit Where orchard boughs are bending. The grapes are purple in the hedge, The ripened corn shows yellow, The brooding haze o'er hill and plain Makes all the landscape mellow. The sumach and the maple tree Still fling their gay red banners, Inviting men in glade and glen To join in loud hosannahs. O dwellers in this beauteous land, Join in the glad thanksgiving- For all the blessings of our homes, And the dear delight of living; For kindly deeds and words of cheer From those who know and love us; For all the stores which autumn yields And the smiling skies above us. James Roger diary entry
February 17, 1909 (Monday)
Frosty – slight showers of snow which melted as it fell. David went for coal for George Chapman and got horses sharpened. Berkley went away with him. Telephone man called for his monthly a/c. Got ½ dozen red herrings from F Shirland. Had cows out in forenoon.
C006 looks as though it might have been taken at the Children’s Fair or another church event.
Photo C001. The lady in the middle is Laura Emma, Phil Emma’s mother, I believe. She was a good friend to my mother, Eleanor Somero Kangas, and a very genial person.
