Of course this was a re-enactment. Frederic W. Jones played President Washington. Mother of Frances Jones Burton fashioned his wig of spun flax.
James Roger diary entry
February 15, 1909 (Saturday)
Heavy rain all day high South wind. Snow is nearly all gone. Clearing up at sunset. David went for grain in forenoon and Jim and he washed the harness after. Then David went in afternoon to meet Berkley who arrived at about 5. I fixed Church furnaces.
That first photo of the girls in the swing is idyllic. That’s what growing up in New Ipswich used to be like. Unstructured time outdoors spent with your buddies, no electronics or agendas, and plenty of fresh air.
Enjoy those old photos. The Thayers were a typical American family, not much different from other NI families. Their contributions to the town however were way above average.
