William Jurian Kaula diary
Now comes the "mouth of the law" or the Grand Bouche as we call him with the complaint that one of our neighbors has lost of her rainwater that was collected in a tub under the spout of her house in the courtyard. Perhaps we had stolen it to use for washing our brushes? We were in bed when the official arrived and he escaped unharmed. Talk about robbing hen roosts and fruit trees! It never entered my head to steal rainwater and since it is raining it makes me gloat to think of acquiring a few thousand gallons to-night to lay by for future use. In a country where everything is valuable it never occurred to me until now that there would be many ways to make our disagreeable neighbor more miserable. Our next complaint will probably be about consuming to much air and making a needless waste by too much smoking.
[Note: Grand Bouche = big mouth]
