December 24, 2024
When an event ends, it can be considered part of history. These photos were taken on Saturday, December 14, 2024. There was a tree lighting ceremony with hot chocolate and hot cider.

Hot Cocoa and Cider
It was most welcome and we all clasped the cups to keep our hands warm.

What is Carl Toko up to now?
Of course it wouldn’t be a town event without an appearance from Carl Toko.

Christmas Ornaments (Cookies?)
Now for something a little more “historic” from the Thayer photo album. An undated photo of children making what appear to be Christmas tree ornaments.
Formulas
Stephen A. Thayer’s “One Hundred Formulas” was published in 1883. It contains recipes from everything from printing ink to pain killers. Make some catsup with a shelf life of 5 years.

December 15, 1908 (Tuesday) - Exploding Safe
Frosty, cloudy. Threatening snow wind west to NW. David helping Corbett to deepen well in Church cellar. I wrote to Mr. Loudon and Miss Bryce. Got letter from Hamish with account of fire near depot and blow up of safe in Lyman St. Mail late at night. Train broke down at Pratt’s and not expected to be in before ½ past 9
The kids decorating ornaments. Is that a photo of Kathy, Donna, and Bruce Emma?
The catsup recipe. That’s an awful lot of allspice and cloves added in the mix. Usually these spices are added sparingly as many people don’t really like them. Maybe that’s why the catsup kept so long on the shelf. Wonder how it tasted. Maybe I’ll make an experimental small batch and find out.
