William Jurian Kaula diary
I slept in Cartwright's bed last night. He went to Glover's studio. This bed was not at all comfortable and I was so cold that I did not sleep much. He has built a sort of a temporary canopy over the couch to keep out the light and dust. It is made of poles covered with drapery and is as rude and rustic as a habitation build by the Gauls or Druids. All that I really need for present use is a bed which I will get without delay. Cartwright has the furniture that Weyeths loaned or gave him which includes many of the necessary articles, like a wash stand, table, chairs, a bed, and some dishes. We are both planning to furnish the rest at the most econimical [sic] rates. The studio is not large, only about fifteen feet square with a balcony which extends further back over the hallway. We have a stove that was purchased from the concierge at three francs. Cartwright bought a small old-fashioned clock with pulley weights. It refused to keep time unless most of the furniture in the studio was tied to the weights. As soon as the clock had this heavy load, it would go splendidly and Cartwright would steal up softly and remove the furniture piece by piece so that the clock did not feel the loss and would go on without them. The trouble is rectified now by hanging it against the wall properly.

James Roger diary entry
4th (Wednesday)
Mild and fair morning with wind west then about 9am it began to cloud over getting very dark about 10. Heavy black clouds overcast the sky with a few drops of rain. Academy lit up about 10 o’clock then cleared away getting much colder and wind northwest. David on roads down town and says town very quiet. No excitement of any kind. Hamish telephoned this morning. Berkley’s foot comfortable. All the rest well. He said Taft had swept the country. I seeded down the Gordon lot this morning and cut the two rows of turnips in field wheeling them home in the afternoon. Papers full today of the unexpected sweeping Republican majorities all over the country.

A fine Autumn day on Fox Farm Road
Nice stone wall on Fox Farm Rd. I built a 50 ft long stone wall on my property so I know how difficult it is. Also the base needs to be below the frost line if it's going to last.
The view of the open field reveals hand-dug drainage ditches to relieve the marshy wetness of the area.
