1923 - Wasp Nest
Apparently this wasp nest was worthy of a photo that was in the album.

William Jurian Kaula diary
16 FEB 1898
Not at work today. Laid up with some sort of a tired feeling - I have a curious trouble that makes me nervous. I took a bath(!) a few days ago and got so much water in my right ear that I have not been able to hear much with it since, owing to the infernal buzzing and singing which makes a continual performance. Since I put a little machine oil in there th wheels are running more smoothly...I dropped into the American Club and remained for supper. I met an old friend Walter Sargent of old acquaintance in the Normal Art School. There are probably about thirty or forty Boston men in Paris studying art. I don't know anything about Sargent's present work. He was assistant supervisor of drawing for the State of Massachusetts when I left home. He is a splendid fellow.
Today we received the news of the awful accident that befell the U.S.S. Maine in the harbor of Havanna. Following, as it does, a few days after the scandal and recall or resignation of the Spanish Ambassador DeLôme for his conduct as a diplomat in Washington, this catastrophe to the Maine produces a profound impression. The time, place, and critical situation between the two governments makes this event s_____ of treachery or malice. I hope that the suspitions [sic] which are aroused by the disaster will not lead to anything serious until a thorough investigation has been made into the cause of the sinking and explosion on the Maine. The affair will of course create a great excitement in America - especially when the cheap class of yellow newspapers start in on the sensational war scares. The loss to the U.S. Navy in the Maine will be seriously felt. We need not be over-confident in the ability of our small navy.* If such accidents as this one are likely to happen at any time, a warship is as dangerous in times of peace as well as in war. Nothing has ever happened in the history of our navy in the nature of a disaster as serious as that which occurred on the Maine - International affairs lately have been of a stirring interest, the troubles between the grabbing powers in China, the same thing in Africa, the don't touch me feeling between the U.S. and S[pain indeed make the times lively. Add to this the Zola-Dreyfus affair in Paris there is much to talk about between working hours and meal times.
*It was Evans who said that if he was allowed to take the Indiana to Cuba he would end the rebellion inside of a month, and that there would be no language spoken in Hell but Spanish for the next ten years!

James Roger diary entry
16th (Sunday)
Frost – fine day Mr. Smith preached from text “Bear ye one another’s burdens” told some plain truths about the decay of religion in New England. And advocating work amongst the foreign population. C.E. Miss Taylor leader topic: “Caring for prisoners and sick” 11 present. Berkley’s cold better. David and him put dump cart on wheels.
I always thought the sinking of the Maine was an intentional act of Spain and ignited the Spanish American war. Wikipedia says that was never confirmed and that 'yellow journalism' (aka today: DISINFORMATION) or biased reporting excited the American public. Hearst media and other US mainstream media were guilty of this. It could have been a mine or a boiler explosion.
If you look at the photo of the interior of the Wapack Lodge in a previous post, there is a wasp next hanging in the corner of the room. Maybe the same one.
