William Jurian Kaula diary
7 FEB 1898
The Zola trial opens today. The public interest in the event is intense. Zola is charged with libel in his open letter in which he accused the minister of war and the officers who acquitted Gen. Esterhazy of being perjurers. It is hoped that it will throw more light on the Dreyfus Affair. Zola is not along on trial. France itself is accused of a crime against justice and of stifled investigation. The whole affair throws discredit on the nation as long as there is a suspicion on their system of justice.
