William Jurian Kaula diary
14 APR 1898
Events are proceeding with great rapidity in Congress. The pent up feelings of the past two weeks has broken out. A declaration of war might be announced by either country. Congress is preparing Resolutions and they will have to reach the President before any definite plans are carried out, and this may take several days. Congress has at its discretion the responsibility of deciding as to peace or war since the President has thrown the responsibility on their shoulders. It is the feeling over here that America is not allowing sufficient time to allow Spain's new policy to be carried out in Cuba. Mr. Courtney, the distinguished Democrat in England points out that the people in America are not giving sufficient weight to the fact that there has been a marked change in Spanish policy in regard to Cuba in the past few months. No time is given for the trials of the new systems. The intense excitement which naturally prevails prevent them from realizing what a greater triumph it would be to secure freedom for Cuba without plunging into a costly war. The sharpness of the demands of the United States have too much of a provocative character, and it is the wish of foreign statesmen to induce both Powers to approach each other "in the interests of a settlement which might secure all the essentials of national honor." Disorderly scenes like that which occurred in the House yesterday are disgraceful. They make war among themselves instead of being cool-headed and capable of carrying the nation through this grave crisis.

James Roger diary entry
14th (Wednesday)
Fine south mild rain, changing winds. David at Miss Palmer’s. I put some wood ashes on some lots. Got letter from Berkley saying May had cold and could not come.
Yes, it looks like Waterloom Pond downstream from the bridge. The dam would be to the right just beyond the photo. One can see both Old Country Rd and River Rd. Kaula's entry today has a familiar ring to it. Sounds like the US is in a similar quandary today. The Finnish interview today depicts an aspect of Finnish life in New Ipswich that I never experienced. The Finns depicted seem to be Amish-like.
