William Jurian Kaula diary
15 APR 1898
The disorder in the House yesterday has or will bring forth much censure from the European Press and alienate much sympathy from the cause of the United States. The debate in the Senate shows no moderation in its decisions. Nothing is left for a basis for negotiation or compromise. Senator Hoar made a strong speech in favor of peace and questioned the wisdom of rushing headlong into war until every effort had been made to bring about an honorable cessation of hostilities in Cuba.

James Roger diary entry
15th (Thursday)
Rain, wind easterly to west, fair after 10 am. Grass beginning to look green. David painting at Miss Palmer’s. I fixed pen for brooders. Got letter from Hamish, all well. Put wood ashes on lots yesterday and today.
Nice photo of Waterloom Pond taken from a spot across the road from where I lived in the 50s. The Preston place is in the far background. Kaula seems to follow US politics even while in France. Senator Hoar is mentioned. There were Hoars in New Ipswich and a Hoar Pond as well. I had a friend named Paul Hoar. Like James Roger I spread my wood ashes as fertilizer (in my apple orchard and raspberry patch).
