View of Water Loom Pond. Note the bridge on Old County Road. Few trees and much more water. Undated photo.

William Jurian Kaula diary
25 MAR 1898
Owing to the prevailing bad weather, cold, dampness, and other difficulties I decided to return to Paris for a few days to nurse my sore throat which I developed from too much enthusiasm for open air work. I have worked even after sundown when my hands were so cold that I could hardly hold my brushes. The hotel is very damp even when it is dry outside. I found our studio in a violent state of disorder and as if no one had been in it since some great celebration when everything was overturned. I found Cartwright at Logan's as I expected. Glover left Paris last night on his way home in Boston. I dined with Lee. It is well that I left Crécy. It is not spring but winter. The snow was falling thick and fast and the roofs were covered when I got up in the morning. Spring is over a week behind the season last year as I was in Moret last year on this date. The fruit trees were then in blossom and the trees putting forth leaves. Monsieur Marchand the Frenchman who was at Crécy last summer arrived at Poulains last evening. Cartwright explained that he was not in the studio at all during the day except to go there and sleep. I was not at all pleased to see all my things covered with dirt even if they were not being used.

James Roger diary entry
25th (Thursday)
East wind and rain, sleet and hail all day. I swept Hall and vestry and lit fires in both places for Grange and sewing circle. Bill and Corbett arrived he went for Mrs. Peacock and that was all of the circle. Mrs. Huckins and Mrs. Sargent were also there. No Grange.
Nice photo of Waterloom pond. I crossed that bridge many times on my bike, though not as many times as I did on the George Washington bridge to avoid tolls (5-6 days/wk for 8 yrs).
