1898
David Stiles, resident of Bank Village was stricken with paralysis on October 13, 1898 Thursday and passed peacefully away about 9.30 p. m. Monday, October 17, 1898.
At the time of his death his son W. H. Stiles, Second Massachusetts Infantry, U. S. V., was at Santiago fighting in the Spanish-American war. This segment of a letter to his family was published in the paper.
"Dear Father, Mother and Sisters: I will just send you a few lines to let you know that I am alive and well. We are now about 10 miles from Santiago and marching towards it every day. It is all surrounded with barbed wire fences 15 feet high. Each company has two pairs of wire cutters and men selected whose work will be to cut the fences down. We have had two brushes with the Spaniards in which we had 17 killed and 35 wounded. The country is awful rough and hilly. I have seen no game except a few wild hens. Please excuse having to pay postage, but we soldiers while we have money have no way of spending any of it. Write often for I want to hear from home."

The liver pills sound scary.
Before working for Tricnit Hosiery I was hired by John Mack to clear an opening for his future Snack Bar. After I cleared the opening, I became his carpenter's helper. The other gentleman in the photo, Toivo Wiik, was the husband of my aunt's sister, Shirley Aho, (also Ollie Niemi's aunt). He was a WWII vet and also devoted to his community.
