One of my favorite features of Smithville is the waterfall near Hildreth Place and Goen Road. Previously the location of Wheeler’s sawmill. Here are a few “new” photos that we just discovered as part of our preservation project. Photos were donated by Orville Antilla in 2001.

James Roger diary entry
19th March 1912
Fine day; wind variable, roads very soft; snow going fast. David making window blinds or screens for May. I went for mail in afternoon; heard today that Mr. Carr, the strawberry farmer at Ashby, had shot himself last night. Supposed financial difficulties. Today is the 6th anniversary of my darling Mary’s death. “I shall go unto her; she will not return unto me.”
Notes:
Mary was the daughter of James, buried in Central Cemetery
