James Roger diary entry
3rd (Friday)
Warm and sultry. Wind varying E. to S. David on roads with Royce at Gilson Place. I planted 3 rows of cabbage. Hoed up 2 rows of potatoes and raked together the grass at foot of orchard cut yesterday. Thunder began in afternoon and copious showers fell between 5 and 6pm. I went to mail at night and there met the Hoopers. John Cummings came yesterday, also Mrs. Huckin’s daughter from Los Angeles. I sat up until after midnight. The church bell was never rung. I believe out of sympathy with Ruth Amee who is very sick.

One of the first settlers in New Ipswich along with his brother Deacon Benjamin. For many years they were owners in common of a large farm, which they managed together. He assisted in the first organization of the church and was chosen its first deacon in 1762. Deacon Adams was noted for his strong original sense and quaint humor. He took a leading part in the strong measures which preceded the Revolutions; and when the war broke out did his full duty, both in the council and the field. Probably no man in the town did so much to procure soldiers and other means of the war. During his long residence here, he was oftener than almost any man, elected to various town offices. He represented the town in the Provincial Congress, and was four years a Representative in the State Legislature (1782-1785), and was a soldier of the Revolution, and was present at the battle of White Plains. He was descended from William Adams, who was at Cambridge in 1635, but removed to Ipswich (MA) before 1642.
