William Jurian Kaula diary
14 MAR 1898
Another bright day. I had a little leisure in the afternoon and went for another ride with Lee. We kept inside of the fortifications or rather the city wall, for as fortifications they are now considered of little value. Paris has to be walled in so as to be able to collect the _____ the customs levied on all foods that enter the city by the gates and railroads. Our route went through thinly populated portions of the city. When we reached the Seine at the Point du Jour we went outside of the walls into Issy. Here is a large level field used by the calvary and infantry in drilling. All along the walls inside the city are small barracks called _______ where portions of regiments are quartered. We saw a large corps of men drilling with drum and bugle, it made a terrific din that could be heard a mile. We saw a little of the towns of Vauves, Malakoff, and Montrouge, none of which are interesting.
Note: the two blanks in this March 14th entry were left blank by Kaula. Perhaps he was going to look up and add the French words but didn't get around to it.

Frosty fine day. Mr. Peacock preached on Solomon’s dream at Gibeon. S.S. after 10 present 8 seniors 2 juniors. C.E. in evening. Mr. Peacock leader, topic Prayer & Promises 15 present.
Doing a search on the Elys I came across a marriage announcement of FW Ely's son Joseph Shattuck Ely who was living in Montclair, NJ (nice town, I lived there for 8 yrs). Joe Ely's maternal grandfather was Horace Shattuck from New Ipswich.
With regards to the Ely house, F W sold it in 1919 to Mrs Franklin Joy. The is a Joy Ln in Bank Village but no structures on it, and the road is short and not on a hill, so I don't think the Ely was there.
