These creatures with bird brains survive the harshest conditions that would be a challenge to humans. So Kaula has trouble living on a $600/yr allowance in 1897. In 1930 my father worked 'breaking roads in New Ipswich for $2.25/day. I would estimate that would translate to less than $1/day in 1897. So Kaula gets a working man's wages as an allowance and complains. BTW, My father later worked in both the Highbridge and Greenville Mills as a loom fixer. He could fix anything.
