There was a John S Brown selling linens in Fitchburg but the New Ipswich John Brown was a minister who went to Kansas to preach. He was also an abolitionist like the Harper's Ferry John Brown.

It's interesting and a tribute to the community spirit of New Ipswich to see so many volunteers engaged in the welfare of the town. Lot of familiar names are listed. How did all these men get to the fire? Horseback I assume. With regards to John S Brown, I assume the 'S' is there to distinguish him from the Harpar's Ferry John Brown.
