NEW IPSWICH, N. H., Sept. 23- Mrs. Matti Maki, 53 years old, was killed by lightning yesterday after- noon about 5 o'clock at her home in the north part of the town near Kidder mountain during a severe thunderstorm. She lived only a few minutes. There were no marks on her body. She was lowering a shade at a window in the pantry at the time. The bolt set fire to a curtain in the front room near the radio, but a member of the family quickly extinguished the blaze.
Mrs. Maki was a native of Finland. She had been a resident of New Ipswich for many years. She leaves her husband and eight children, the youngest 13 years old.

James Roger diary entry
17th May 1913
Cool northerly wind. David choring round and went to Greenville to meet Alice. Mother fairly comfortable. I picked fowl and took it to Miss Barr’s. Frank Hirck (Hyck?) mowed John Preston’s lawn on Friday.
I wonder what Mrs Maki’s first and maiden names were and who helped take care of her younger kids when she died. Probably the older kids.
This is a very interesting one, thanks John. Her name is Kaisa Serafina Syrijala Maki, married to Matti Nikoli Maki, she had 4 sons, Hjalmar, born 1904, Arthur, 1905, Toimi, 1908 and Walter, 1908.
