William Jurian Kaula diary
4 MAR 1898
All of the crowd that went in costume to the Viti ball agreed to pose in costume for the rest of the fellows on two afternoons in Logan's studio. As I have been very busy with my preparations for going away to the country I have been unable to work but twice and my turn to pose fell on today and tomorrow. Glover and Logan have both made several good studies - particularly of Cartwright. Leavitt's work is bad. He was a student in Paris for three years but that has not counted for much.

James Roger diary entry
4th March (Thursday)
Snow showers wind N.E. David choring round, spent afternoon with D. Maynard cleaning harness afternoon. I have cold but went for mail. Got letter from Alice and Hamish. Mr. Eastman of Temple before authorities yesterday. Verdict Justified Homicide.
Too bad we don't have the names of the firemen.
As James Roger states Mr. Eastman was not charged. That was the right decision. If someone points a loaded gun at you and seems to be in a rage I think you are justified in shooting him. In 1965 I was held at gunpoint at the entrance to Boston's Franklin Park across from the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital where I worked. A car came by slowly, passenger window came down, a little old lady yelled: "1'm calling the police!". The gunman (and his 3 friends) left the scene immediately. Never got to know who that lady was.
