William Jurian Kaula diary
13 APR 1898
Congress has started in to frame resolutions. They are full of strong and emphatic language that cannot be mistaken. Their course is frank enough. War is expected on all sides. McKinley's Message was not received very favorable in Europe and the comments, except in England, were very critical. Though the President does not share the same views as Congress he will more be bound to act on the resolutions. McKinley wishes for a liberal programme but Congress will demand the evacuation of Cuba and withdrawal of Spanish authority. He did not aim at a deliberate provocations to Spain and Congress will not be slow in reaching such ends.

James Roger diary entry
13th April 1909 (Tuesday)
Fair day strong south wind, drying up roads &c. David painting at Miss Palmer’s. I filled boiler and put some stones in orchard drain. Had horses out, also cows. Got Easter cards from brother Bob, and Agnes Roger. Bert Mansfield started for out west yesterday. Mrs. Sampson telephoned that May was coming on Thursday. Mr. Huckins telephoned for Fred Cushing to come over and see him. Heard the frogs peeping tonight.
Nice photo of Old Country Rd. Interesting how open the landscape was then. The house to the left was a Preston house (Frank? & Eva?), I never addressed them by their first names so I'm guessing here. Across the road from the house you can see a stone wall that follows a path to the beach. Mr. Preston would sit under a tree by the gate and collect 10 cents per car. After Mr. Preston died Mrs. Preston came to live with us for a yr.
