William Jurian Kaula diary - Left Voulangis
A letter from Hazard and a note. Trunks, easles [sic], canvases, paint-boxes, and all the apparatus of a painter were loaded on a donkey-cart this morning and transported to Hotel Poulain in Crécy. We bade Madame Travet farewell and hurried after our load as there was some doubt the willingness of the donkey to cross the bridge into Crécy. Everything went well until he reached the middle when the clock on the church nearby began to strike the hour. At the first peal the animal stiffened his legs and decided to stay where he was. No amount of persuasion either gentle or emphatic had any effect on the beast. Monsieur Minet is a strapping big peasant and after a struggle and tussle in which there was great danger of the donkey and all our possessions going over the rail into the river. But by superior strength alone the obstinate ass was dragged across though his feet were planted and braced for all the resistance possible.
I had a genuine foot-ball game with the donkey that is posing for Miss Shuttleworth. This brute is as staunch as a Yale team and would have delighted Walter Camp to see how well he resisted my onslaughts. I bucked the centre again and again with no gains. I tried to go "around the end" with disastrous results. Here it developed into a kicking game, the donkey keeping his end up in the most effective manner. And where I tried a "flying wedge" it took him by surprise as it was soon evident that he was unaccustomed to momentum plays. Here too there was no gain as we were "off sides" and dangerously near a large window. The audience was very enthusiastic and applauded all the fine points. No score.
Note: Walter Camp was the head football coach at Yale from 1888 to 1892. 67 wins - 2 losses.
Bill Currier in addition to being an inventor and machinist, was an amazing athlete. He was my ski instructor and I skied with his daughter at Mt Watatic and Temple Mt when they had rope tow skiing. He was also considered the best swimmer in town. I remember in the 50s when a swimmer at the Preston beach went under and didn't surface Bill was the person called to attempt to retrieve that swimmer. The area off that beach dropped of quickly and was quite deep. Bill and June also ran a ski shop in Bankvillage and I bought my ski equipment from them.
