My maternal grandfather Fred Somero worked for the NI electric company long enough that some people thought he owned it. Apparently he was fond of playing electrical tricks on the newbies coming to work there.

Electrical Tricks? Electrocuting them?

To get electricity to our house on River Rd my father had to make a deal with the NI electric company. My father said he would dig all the pole holes for 1 mile, from the house to Gibson 4 corners. He dug them all by hand!

For Patricia. Did Mrs Fred Somero ever get that needle removed from her abdomen, left there by a surgeon?

And I would have been disappointed had James Roger not picked any fowls for dessert after dinner.

haha. So what does picking two fowls mean? Is he catching wild birds? With traps? Or is he butchering his chickens?

I think he’s butchering chickens for other people as well as for himself. I think the picking refers to actually plucking out the feathers, which is a very messy and tedious job. No one household would likely eat as many chickens as he seems to pluck, so people in town must have hired him to do it to their broilers as well. He seems in the past to distinguish between plucking fowls v plucking chickens. An older person told me once that the term fowls refers not only to the species overall as a whole but that those birds commonly termed ‘fowls’ were perhaps rather past their prime. We would have better facts if we could ask a current or former chicken farmer these deep questions.

Yes, they got it out. Not a good situation. I think she got a financial settlement too.
