October 1935
NEW IPSWICH
A memorial service was held in Wayland, Mass., for Robert R. Ames and his two sons, Richard Glover Ames, 23, and Harry Russell Ames, 20, who were drowned when their ketch, Hamrah, was caught in a storm during the Newport- Norway ocean race. Mr. Ames was swept overboard and Richard, a Harvard '34 man, and Henry, a member of the class of '38, lost their lives in an attempt to rescue him. Robert Ames spent many vacations and weekends in New Ipswich. "Echo Knoll" was the home of his grandfather, Samuel T. Ames, and he also was a frequent visitor at the home of his aunt, Miss C. F. Barr, now the home of James C. Barr.

James Roger diary entry
11th June 1913
Fair and warm, and a beautiful ideal day. David and W. H. trimming lots in cemetery and working at Spoffords’ in afternoon. Hamish and I picked two fowls, and Hamish went to Greenville and got horse shod and brought oil cloth for kitchen. Dr. called for information about mother for notification to Mr. Phelps. Mr. Farrar and son came last night to embalm mother. Mrs. Lena Preston called in the morning, and Mr. Lord. Also Mr. and Mrs. Phelps. Mr. Walker was buried this afternoon.
Beautiful photo indeed.
But where did the morticians embalm Mother?
Another sad obit. I guess they weren't wearing life jackets. Also James' entry today sounds 'matter-of-fact' but I'm sure it he was not. Nice photo. It also could be River Rd at the intersection of Old Country Rd and River Rd. John Preston had a summer camp between the two on the left.
