Description of the Smithville pillars written by Abbie L. Phelps in 1938
Two tall pillars here were so much a part of Smith Village that they deserve special mention. They were square shaped and topped with three story bird houses, beautifully designed and built, the work of Richard H. Davis. These were in turn topped by weather vanes and sign boards were fastened to their sides telling the way in all directions. One was near the Shirland Store, the other in the triangle formed by the cross roads near the old Wright store, now known as Hildreth Square. The hurricane of 1938 is said to have damaged both of these landmarks.
WWII Veterans
Hazel Moore compiled an album of New Ipswich WWII veterans for the New Ipswich Historical Society. As a prelude to our town’s Memorial Day celebration, we will feature several photos each day.

James Roger diary entry
9th (Thursday)
Thunderstorm about midnight. Strong north and northwest wind and rain during night. Strong high N x NW wind all day. David in brooder house also drawing rocks for Mr. Hardy and put away sleds and snow plow for a season. I fixed hall for Grange tonight.
It would be great to recreate that Smithville landmark. I wonder if it would be permitted today or welcome by the neighbors.
