Sounds like Tom the horse was a smart animal wanting his master to leave the event early and get back to the barn and home on a stormy night.

The Frenchies were a lively bunch for sure. This is a link to traditional Canadian music and step dancing. Henri Vaillancourt in Greenville is a good source of information about this.

Nice brief sketch of New Ipswich. I spent my boyhood years fishing from the exact spot the photo of Highbridge was taken. In 1909 the town had many Frenchies and Finns. The French were French Canadian and worked in the mills, the Finns mainly farmers. My father grew up on a farm and later worked in the mills. The population in 1840 was the same in 1950.

2 take aways from this great post today. A little interesting to see Watatic referred to as Watatic Hill. And Hoar Pond. I am thinking that such a small percentage of N.I. residents have ever seen Hoar Pond. Or even know about it. I remember years ago cross-country skiing up Old Country Road, above the Country Club over to Hoar Pond. It is our town's hidden gem.

My maternal great, great grandparents emigrated from Canada to New Ipswich. My grandparents eventually settled in Greenville and worked in the mills.

Haven't seen this photo of the stone arch bridge before. It is a work of art!
