Brown’s Cotton Mill
The first cotton mill in New Hampshire and one of the first in the United States was located in New Ipswich, New Hampshire circa 1803
What Remains
Dennis Gauvin took a series of photos on June 18, 2004 at the site of the mill. What remains are the penstock which carried water to the turbines and a spillway along the Souhegan River. These photos were taken in Bank Village.

James Roger diary entry
28th (Saturday)
Fair and bright with cool north west wind veering to west. David and C. Whittemore spreading manure & picking rocks of the Jim Davis field, cleared out under barn and cleared away the poultry droppings out garden lot. I rested most of day not feeling just right the past three weeks dull pressure on head and attacks of vertigo. Mrs. Spofford put her cross on her lot today. John Barnet and wife assisting. I walked down town in afternoon and got mail. Letters from Alice and Hamish.

Painting party for young people organized by the multi-talented Angelika Weber in her studio in Smithville.
Angelika seems to be a real asset to New Ipswich. Also want to thank Dennis Gauvin for those photos.
I know the dam and penstock well. Fished off the dam, rode my bike on the pipe. The building in the photo looks like the one just north of the bridge in Highbridge that was converted to apartments for the mill. There may have been another building at the BankVillage dam but it wasn't there in 1950. The lower dam in Highbridge was rebuilt in 1950. Not sure why there was a lower dam.
