Maybe Justin Smith had pigs? I know he had chickens..maybe the picture is older than the Smith farm? His father Lester had a farm in the 50s census. Probably same farm.

In the 20s one's assessment for taxes included livestock on the property. It was a wealth tax on the poor farmers. The wealthy had their summer homes in NI and no animals to tend to. Have to give Matti credit for eventually paying for the hatched chickens. He didn't want to count them before they hatched! Alcohol was a medicine during prohibition (1920-1933) and had to be prescribed. It could have been gin but more likely medicinal brandy.
