Just for the fun of it I did an internet search for "Walter Thayer's dog" and in 2 seconds a clip from the Fitchburg Sentinel (Dec 11,1903) popped up. It described how Walter Thayer's dog retrieved Curtis Huckins' heifer which was on the loose. The dog held the heifer by the cheek until Curtis could get to it. This dog has 30 rescues to his credit. I wonder if young Phil Thayer has ever heard about his great grandfather's legendary dog?

I think you're right. I think the man at the end of the road walking his dog is Walter Thayer. :)
